I think back to my friend’s wedding and she had a DIY one, but nothing really stood out that symbolized her and her husband. It was a beautiful wedding, but the decor was just generic. Our thoughts are if we are going to spend this much money, then we are going to try our damnedest to make sure it resembles us and what we both love and enjoy doing together. Trying to personalize your wedding may make you think you’ll see more dollar signs, but if you plan it right and take a little extra time, you can do it at a minimal cost. I have even enlisted the help of so many friends and family members to keep their eye out for certain items.
By now you should already know that our theme is music. I compiled a list of music related items we would need to decorate: vinyl albums, guitar, guitar case, sheet music. Lucky for us, I’ve had an acoustic guitar I’ve been holding into that we will use as prop, but the case for it is soft and we need a hard one for our cards box. I have been looking on Craigslist, garage sales, and asking friends and friends of friends and we found one we can borrow for free! Then for the records, we need ones that we can paint so we couldn’t borrow any without destroying them. I kept an eye on Craigslist and got so lucky this past weekend that someone around the corner from our house was having a vinyl records only garage sale and the later you went, the cheaper the prices. And since we didn’t care which specific records we got, we ended up with a variety of full length and 45s totaling 42 records for only $15!! That’s only $0.36 each!
We have also been picking up 5×7 picture frames that we are using as part of the centerpieces from garage sales. We usually only pay $.50 – $1 per frame. From the store, these frames would be at least $5 each! So there are lots of ways to cut your costs if you are patient and have the determination to search online a lot or go to lots of sales.
