Why I Dislike Valentine’s Day with a Passion

As you know, it’s Valentine’s Day. The day of overpriced chocolates, flowers, stuffed animals and a bunch of other junk… I’m not a fan of this day if you couldn’t tell! In my opinion, this is the dumbest holiday, EVER. The end. Lucky for Ben, he doesn’t have to stress over this holiday, and neither do I!

I have spent some V-Day’s in a relationship and some while single. Actually the best, was in grade school when you got to buy little valentine’s cards and make one for each kid in your class. Do they still do that?? Anyway, back on to the point… There wasn’t one incident that made me hate this holiday. It’s just the whole concept of this day that’s actually kind of shitty. Too much pressure is put on those in a relationship to plan something nice or buy some shitty gift. I mean seriously, how tacky are those teddy bears holding a heart that says I love you? Not to mention, they cost about $20. Then what do you do with it when the day is over? Re-gift it next year, or at least that’s what I would do.

So if you aren’t dropping dollas on bad gifts and expensive dinners that require reservations weeks in advance, you’re probably single… So then what? You get to be reminded you’re alone and haven’t found that special someone? You get to cry over a tub of ice cream while watching The Notebook? I may or may not have done this before…

Love should be celebrated every day. It means more to take your significant other out to dinner as a surprise on a random night. Or send a little love card to a friend on a day when they aren’t expecting it. It’s the small gestures and unexpected ones that make life more special and fun.

So while the rest of the world is going the extra mile to please someone special, Ben and I will be sitting at home eating pasteles, watching MTV’s The Challenge and probably falling asleep on the couch around 9pm.

How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

  1. I totally agree that Valentine’s Day was way better in elementary school. My husband and I don’t do gifts for V Day and if we end up going out, we avoid any restaurants (crowded and more expensive for this one day). One year we went to Chick-fil-A and it was packed! I think everyone else is getting tired of Valentine’s Day, too.
